Tongue Twisters（英語の早口言葉）

火・木曜日に開講される教会でのESLクラス。
２時間だけのクラスですが、こちらはPima community collegeとは違って10人ほどの少人数クラスです。

木曜日にTongue Twisters（英語の早口言葉）のプリントを頂きました。

- I have got a date at a quarter to eight; I'll see you at the gate, so don't be late.
- If two witches would watch two watches, which witch would watch which watch?
- How many cookies could a good cook cook, if a good cook could cook cookies? A good cook could cook as many cookies as a good cook who could cook cookies.
- She sells seashells on the seashore. The shells she sells are seashells, I'm sure.
- How now brown cow.
- Red leather, yellow leather, red leather, yellow leather.
- A rabbit ran around a rock, around a rock a rabbit ran.
- A big bug bit a bold bald bear and the bold bald bear bled blood badly.
- I saw Susie sitting in a shoe shine shop.
- Green glass globes glow greenly.
- Four furious friends fought for the phone.
- Give papa a cup of proper coffee in a copper coffee cup.

どれも何とか読み上げるのは簡単なのですが、それが英語のネイティブスピーカーに伝わるか？というと、自信のないものも出てきます。
RやL、THの発音は特に日本人は意識しないと、発音できていないようです。

身近に正しい発音を聞き取ってくれる人が居れば良いのですが、なかなか、ね。
沢山授業中に発言して、練習あるのみ、ですね。

アメリカ版・太陽系惑星の覚え方

今日のGEDでは、Capitalization（大文字の使用方法）について学びました。

その中の関連で、惑星も頭文字を必ず大文字にして書く（例えばearthではなくEarthと書く）と習う中で、理科に関する小ネタを一つ。

My very eager mother just served us nice pizza.

上記の文章、敢えて日本語に訳すことはしませんが、この文章で何を言いたいのかというと…

My
Very
Eager
Mother
Just
Served
Us
Nice
Pizza

大文字の頭文字に注目。日本でも「すいきんちかもくどってんかいめい」と太陽からの順番の覚え方を教えていますが、これはそのアメリカ英語版の覚え方なのです。

つまり…

M - Mercury　（水星）
V - Venus　（金星）
E - Earth　（地球）
M - Mars　（火星）
J - Jupiter　（木星）
S - Saturn　（土星）
U - Uranus　（天王星）
N - Neptune　（海王星）
P - Pluto　（冥王星）

というわけ。

ちなみにUranusは、セーラームーンの登場人物でも「ウラヌス」と言われていますが、「ユラネス」と発音します。ストレス（アクセント）は「ユ」です。
カタカナ表記で分かりにくくてすみません。こういうカタカナ英語が、日本人の英語の発音を悪くさせるのかな…。
